GOODLAND, KS- Northwest Tech Women's soccer entered this game undefeated against a ranked Hutchinson, the Mavericks looked to start this game on the offensive, Hutchinson defended very well and coach Sammy Lane's experience prevailed he made some tactical changes and countered the Mavericks pressure. The Mavericks went 1-0 in the first half from a well struck free kick. The Mavericks had several good goal scoring opportunities the closest was Mav's captain Marina Lopez De Calle Pi struck the post and Alicia Benete Montufu followed up had her chance cleared for a corner kick.
In the 2nd half the Mavericks took control and almost struck gold when the ball bounced to Lopez De Calle Pi in the six yard box, the ball seemed to bounce and not come down for an eternity, she struck the sweet spot putting the ball over the bar. The Mavericks controlled for the next 15 minutes with shot after shot being saves or drifting just wide. Adrijane Felix Cesar broke through 1v1 with the Hutch goalkeeper and was brought down in the area by a Hutch defender, which was a free kick. Shortly after the pressure was seeming to get to the Hutch defense another free kick was taken by Alicia Benete Montufu, left footed she curled the ball into the bottom left of the goal 1-1. After the goal Hutchinson and the Mavericks began an epic battle for the winning goal, the Mavericks had 2 golden opportunities, one shot was struck and headed to goal but what looked like a defenders hand prevented the ball going in and the other one was cleared off the line and went out of play for a corner which was given as a goal kick, Hutch took the goal kick quickly and put the ball past Mavericks keeper Chloe Bailey 2-1. The Mavericks had a couple of chances to level the game and a frantic goal line scramble was cleared by a good Hutchinson defense. Final 2-1.
Coach Carroll said after the game "I am very proud of the girls they played their hearts out, on a different day it would have been a different result, that's why most of the world love soccer, it's a nail biting fan experience, where just because you are the better footballing team (soccer) doesn't mean you are guaranteed the win, Hutch are and have been the dominant force in women's soccer in our side of the conference and to match them and narrowly lose is an achievement in itself. Like I said another day a different result, we get the PK call(s), we get the bounces, but on this day we didn't and soccer can be like that. When I came here my soul task that I set myself was to make the women's team competitive I think given our record so far I have done that, sorry the girls have done that, now my focus is on the next game and getting back to winning"
